Cricket season cancelled at Beverley RUFC
We are able to confirm that plans for Beverley RUFC to switch to playing cricket have been cancelled. The absence of rugby posts on pitches two and three was beginning to create grave concern about our ability to sustain competitive rugby matches as and when the season does restart, serious consideration was given to adopting a more leisurely game 😊.
Fortunately, Beverley Cricket Club will not now face the challenge from their rugby neighbours as East Riding of Yorkshire County Council have come to the Beavers rescue, providing most of the cash to supply the new posts, the rest will be paid from club funds.
Brian Gilbert, Chairman of Beverley RUFC said “We are thrilled to receive this money from the Commuted Sums ERYCC team, it is greatly appreciated, special thanks to Lea Anne and Theresa for their continued support. We’ve been a rugby club with no rugby posts on two of our three pitches, and although we are not allowed to play competitive rugby at the moment, we are allowed to train in accordance with the government and RFU social distancing guidelines, and were missing our iconic H posts.
Without rugby posts we are arguably not a rugby club, but thanks to the commuted sums team we can now abandon plans to play cricket! Our previous posts had gone rotten and become potentially dangerous and in desperate need of replacement, so this is very welcome relief. Council backed schemes like the commuted sums initiative are critical to the support of local community sporting and non-sporting organisations, especially so in these extraordinary times when we have no events/income to help us raise funds to keep the club afloat.”
Rob Laycock, Commuted Sums Officer from the council visited Beaver Park to present the cheque for the award, which Brian and Neil gratefully received. We hope to have the rugby posts up in the next few weeks, and they will be a welcome accompaniment to the recently installed marquees to help with outdoor events and training sessions. Please continue to attend and support your club during these challenging times, thank you.
